Saturn vue timing belt problems

Timing belt change problems! Spending today changing out my water pump and timing belt on my Saturn Vue V6 L81 v6 engine. So, I went ahead and lined everything up, bolted down the four cams, took some quick video of the setup to make sure I put everything back reasonably effectively. Anyway, As I removed the belt I noticed something. The 2 cam specifically appears to be one tooth off advanced one tooth too far clockwise.

I've double and triple checked my belt and markings I made, the cam hasn't moved it's locked down tighter than alcatrazI just didn't notice the 2 cam was off by a tooth because there were some hoses in the way of the marking notch on the back. I guess I assumed it was perfect since everything else was - I marked the belt at the notch on the cam but didn't double-check the backing plate.

Looking at it again just to ENSURE the cam hasn't moved since the belt is absolutely taught between the cams with the 1 cam in exactly the right position, my marker-marks are exactly where they were, and there are exactly the same amount of belt-teeth between white notches on the cams. I have no idea how long this cam has been "skipped forward" a notch, but it is not something I did during my repair.

I am unsure how to progress without doing damage. I would like to line everything up properly but I know I can't just go spin cam 2 until it lines up.

He may have run into this problem before. I put in a message to far2grumpy, we'll see what he says - hopefully he'll see it soon. I'm staring at these cams wondering if I can just free-up my cam 2 and turn it ONE tooth counterclockwise then bolt her back down and get the new belt on. I know the general rule is don't turn anything counterclockwise, but it seems like it'd be soooooo simple to just turn it a HAIR to the left and be done with it.

It's literally off by 1 single toothA bad timing belt or timing chain can be a serious issue.

Saturn Vue: Bad Timing Belt or Chain Symptoms

If it jumps a tooth, or breaks entirely it can lead to permanent engine damage. Timing belts are made out of rubber and nylon, unlike a timing chain which looks a lot like a bicycle chain. For all intents and purposes, they create the same symptoms when they go bad. Timing belts are not that common. Smaller cars, particularly Japanese made ones, can use timing belts instead of a timing chain.

They are most commonly found on four cylinder engines. The timing tensioner can also go bad. The tensioner keeps this from happening by keeping a consistent amount of force on the belt. So, as the belt stretches it adjusts for this stretching. If you are going to replace the tensioner, make sure to swap the belt as well. Most manufacturers will recommend changing the timing belt at 60k or k miles. Although, it can vary. Where a lot of people get into trouble is when they buy a used car with k no realizing that the belt service is going to be immediately due.

Good luck with your Vue. If there is anything that you would like to add, please leave a comment below. We would appreciate it. You might hear it slapping around as the engine cranks over. If this is the case, the damage is already done. There may be a sound of rubber beating against something. The timing belt is responsible for keeping the camshaft s in sync with the crankshaft. If the timing belt has moved, that means that the valves will open and close at the wrong time.

This will lead to a performance decrease. It should grip your finger as you lightly brush across it. If it is slippery and dry, that is a great indication it could be bad as well. But, if it has jumped, the check engine light will very likely come on. At the least, you should get some sort of misfire relate codes. However, it makes a knocking noise when first cranked but it goes away after the oil pressure builds. I've been told there is an arm or lever that rises with the oil pressure that is related to or a component of the timing belt and mine is sticking down until oil pressure Max is reached.

If I start the car and let it idle or "warm up" for 10 mins or so it runs like a top with no noise at all but if I don't give it time and drive off immediately it makes a heck of a racket going down the road for a bit and eventually goes away. Do I need to change the timing belt or someone suggested running straight 30 weight oil and that would take care of the problem?

What are my options and the what is the severity of this knocking. Bradley answered 2 years ago. All due respect it is a belt on these engines.

That said, does it change your answer at all due to it being a different type of part? If that makes sense at all. Sorry thought you had the 2,2 eco tec get my eyes checked. Bradley answered about a year ago.

I've been told there is an arm or I have a Saturn VUE. I have a Saturn vue 5 speed the clutch pedal hit the floor. When I start it I can put it into gear when's it's off it hard to put in gear and is stuck in neutral. Also when I do start it I can It's wrapped around the headrest which we know does not come.

Is there a release button or something on it does anybody know. I have a different car. Content submitted by Users is not endorsed by CarGurus, does not express the opinions of CarGurus, and should not be considered reviewed, screened, or approved by CarGurus.

Or cramping and starting. See all problems of the Saturn VUE. I was on my way home in my Saturn Vue when a buck jumped out in front of me. I stomped on the brakes, however, I ended up hitting the buck deer that then ran away. My entire front in was smashed in, the air bags never deployed, the seat belts didn't lock when I stomped on the breaks.

My daughter and I were both in the front seats and we both went forward messing up both of our necks and backs. While driving 45 mph, the crankshaft pulley on front of engine partially separated from it's hub, causing a drive belt mis-allignment of the pulleys for crankshaft, alternator, and air conditioner.

This caused the drive belt running of these pulleys to shred, resulting in loss of electrical power while driving.

While looking for a replacement part to repair the vehicle, I found out that gm has discontinued this part, gm part Also, I have discovered that a large number of these crankshaft dampner pulleys are now failing, depleting the remaining gm parts stock to zero in the USA, suggesting a defective part design. This dampner-crankshaft pulley fits Saturn Vue thru with l66 3. The resulting loss of alternator power will quickly result in drop in system voltage due to discharge of battery, causing the car engine to unexpectedly shut down.

This is a serious safety issue and these vehicles need to be recalled by gm to correct this condition. The contact owns a Saturn Vue. While driving 65 mph, the timing chain failed. There were no warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel prior to or during the failure. The vehicle was difficult to control, but the contact was able to move it to the side of the road. He took the vehicle to the dealer for repairs. The failure mileage was 84, The vehicle was taken to Saturn honolulu and subsequently found to have a defective damper pulley.

The Saturn mechanic explained that the damper pulley had walked away from the block which caused the serpentine belt to shred. The shredded pieces got into the timing belt cover causing the timing belt to skip and bending all of the valves.

The Saturn mechanic had never seen this happen before and had agreed that the part damper pulley was defective.

Because this was a manufacturer defect, I thought that Saturn would contact the manufacturer general motors and correct the problem. I was informed that I would be responsible for paying to have the problem fixed. I was informed that because the vehicle was purchased from a different dealer that Saturn would not cover the damages.

Dollar fee, I could not use the warranty. I really need some help. Over the past year, I have had several instances where the "check engine" light comes on and the car just shuts down and won't start up. I have also had the low coolant light come on and was leaking anti-freeze, which I kept on filling up.Looking at 05 vue with 3. Original owner is selling. Seller says it runs fine. But they want to sell it. Runs fine. Think I could drive it 20 miles to my house? So, if the recommended interval was the newermiles, you have a chance. The broader question, of course, is what other maintenance has been neglected over the years. Since the Saturn Vue is an obsolete car, no longer made and supported, why even look at it unless someone GAVE it to you? That coupled withmiles driven without basic routine maintenance what else has been deferred?

It may run fine right up the nano-second the belt breaks and then the repair costs will be much higher. Just curious, but what are they asking for this neglected piece of automotive workmanship? But why take the risk? Seller is convinced it will make it, no problem.

Engine running. Note: Have you checked the specs to make sure it even uses a timing belt? By a lot of manufacturers has already switched to timing chains, due to customers complaining about the expense and risk of timing belt service. A colleague owns a Saturn Vue with the Honda 3. A few years back, someone posted on this site that he worked in a factory that built and tested timing belts. He did not say who he worked for. He said during their quality testing, sometimes belts would last over K miles.

If this vehicle has K and is on its original timing belt, I would be worried about many other things, as well. Maybe the transmission has never been serviced. My daughter in law drives an '08 Impala. Her husband, who just happens to be my son funny how that works told me that the 3.

An engine timing belt is a fiber reinforced, toothed drive belt manufactured using durable compounds such as highly saturated nitrile. The timing belt allows the crankshaft to drive the camshafts in the cylinder head at half the RPMs of the crankshaft. Engine designs vary, and thus the replacement procedure will vary, but broadly, the procedure is as follows:.

Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Timing Belt

No, were a worn out timing belt to snap while underway, perhaps on a highway, it creates a risk of complete loss of engine power while surrounded by fast moving vehicles. Once your vehicle has reached the recommended replacement mileage for the belt, you can eliminate the risk of sudden and unexpected timing belt breakage by having it replaced. If your engine is of the interference type, it is especially important to replace the belt according to the maintenance schedule because sudden breakage of the timing belt, while the engine is running, will likely cause significant damage to internal engine components such as the valves and pistons.

Timing Belt. When to replace the timing belt? Every 60kk miles. If an engine is equipped with a timing belt, the timing belt must be replaced at the service interval specified by the vehicle manufacturer regardless of whether or not any problem is visible, typically in the range of 60, to 90, miles.

Engine stops abruptly or will not start. Occasionally, timing belts can break, or skip, while the engine is running. Rough engine operation. The molded, reinforced teeth on the timing belt engage gears on the crankshaft and camshafts. After many tens of thousands of miles, the teeth can wear or break, or the belt can stretch, thus causing the belt to jump position on the crankshaft or camshaft gears.

Should the belt jump, the engine will run poorly and perhaps not at all. Banging or clanking engine noise. On some engines, if the timing belt has jumped, the pistons and valves can collide and there will be noise and damage.

These engine designs are referred to as interference engines. If your car has an interference engine, replacing the timing belt according to the maintenance schedule will minimize the chance that a belt failure will cause engine damage. How do mechanics replace the timing belt? Engine designs vary, and thus the replacement procedure will vary, but broadly, the procedure is as follows: Disconnect the battery ground cable. Once the engine is cold, set the crankshaft to top dead center with the number one piston on the compression stroke.

Remove crankshaft pulley. Remove all accessories interfering with the removal of the timing belt covers. The timing belt is located under a timing cover and is in the front of the engine. It's commonly manufactured out of high-quality rubber with nylon-reinforced cords inside to extend the life of the belt. However, it is subject to incredible forces inside your motor and will need to be replaced eventually. Without a fully functioning timing belt, your engine will not run.

Not all engines have a timing belt.

The timing belt is commonly found in cars and SUVs with smaller displacement engines. When an engine has a larger bore and stroke, most automotive manufacturers utilize a timing chain system that replaces the rubber belt with a metal chain. Generally, timing chains last longer than timing belts, with some rated to last the lifetime of the car.

Most automotive manufacturers have a predetermined recommendation on when you should replace the timing belt, but there are a few warning indicators that a problem exists. Listed below are a few common symptoms that might indicate that your timing belt is wearing out or has broken — which will require a local ASE certified mechanic to replace the timing belt and inspect other internal engine components for damage.

The camshaft operates the cylinder head valves and rocker arm assembly, which sends fuel into the combustion chamber and expels burnt gases out of the exhaust manifold.

When the timing belt starts to wear out, it may create a ticking sound inside the motor. This warning sign may also be an indication of low oil pressure or the engine not having the proper amount of lubrication.

Since the timing belt is so critical to the operation of your vehicle, if you notice this warning sign, you should contact a mechanic as soon as possible. If the timing belt has broken inside, the engine will not be able to turn over or ignite. When you turn the key, you might hear the starter motor engage, but since the timing belt operates the crank and camshaft, it will not turn over.

Obviously, if the car won't starta phone call to a mechanic is usually the first step. However, if the issue is due to the timing belt being broken, it may also result in other internal engine compartment damage.

In many cases, the timing belt will break while the engine is running. Some of the typical damage done to a vehicle with a broken timing belt includes damage to cylinder head hardware rocker arms, push rods or valvesdamage to crank bearings or oil pump inside the oil pan. A professional and experienced mechanic will know how to inspect all of these supporting components if the timing belt needs to be replaced.

A worn out timing belt might also impact the engine's fire rate. The timing belt is attached to pulleys that drive the crank and camshaft as we've indicated above. However, sometimes the belt will slip on the camshaft drive and cause one cylinder to open or close earlier than it should.

This might cause a misfire situation and if not replaced soon, may result in catastrophic engine damage. It's also typical that the engine will leak motor oil from the timing belt cover. The cover is secured by a series of nuts and bolts that may come loose over a period of time.

Another issue that will cause oil to leak is when the gasket between the engine block and timing cover wears out, is cracked or has been improperly installed and is pinched.

Leaking oil from the timing belt cover commonly results in engine overheating as well and can prematurely wear the timing belt.
